Has UKMLA replaced PLAB for international medical graduates?
No. Since 2024/25, UK medical students take the MLA (comprising the AKT and CPSA) as a required part of their degree. International medical graduates (IMGs) continue to sit PLAB, whose content has been aligned with the MLA content map so both routes are held to the same standard. PLAB has not been discontinued for IMGs.
Do IMGs need to take PLAB or the UKMLA?
IMGs still register through PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, now aligned with MLA requirements. Always confirm current eligibility and route options on the GMC's official Medical Licensing Assessment guidance before booking.
What are the UKMLA 2027 dates and registration details?
