AMC Clinical FAQs

What is the AMC Clinical exam?

The AMC Clinical exam is the second stage of the AMC standard pathway for international medical graduates, assessing clinical and communication skills through an OSCE (objective structured clinical examination) format at AMC-accredited venues in Australia.

How many stations are in the AMC Clinical exam?

The AMC Clinical exam has 16 stations, of which 14 are scored. You need to pass at least 9 of the scored stations to pass the exam. Stations include history taking, physical examination, investigation interpretation and communication tasks.

What skills are tested in the AMC Clinical exam?

It tests clinical reasoning, patient examination, diagnostic skills, procedural competence and doctor-patient communication, including rapport, empathy and explanation skills. Simulated patients and examiners assess each station.

How do I prepare for the AMC Clinical exam?

Most successful candidates practise OSCE stations repeatedly with partners or in a course, study the AMC handbook and past exam patterns, and rehearse a structured approach for history, examination and communication within each station's time limit.

Can I sit the AMC Clinical exam before the AMC MCQ?

No. You must pass the AMC CAT MCQ first, then apply and book the AMC Clinical exam. Both exams are part of the standard pathway to general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
