MOrth FAQs

What is the MRCOphth exam?

The MRCOphth is the postgraduate examination from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) that ophthalmologists in training pass to progress in the UK's Ophthalmic Specialist Training (OST) programme. It is part of the FRCOphth qualification route.

How many parts does the MRCOphth have?

The MRCOphth is taken in parts. Part 1 tests applied basic sciences and optics, and later parts assess clinical knowledge and skills. Passing all parts is required to complete the FRCOphth examination and proceed in specialist training.

How hard is the MRCOphth exam?

Pass rates are moderate and the exam is demanding because it combines detailed basic science with clinical application. Structured revision of the RCOphth curriculum, question banks and past papers significantly improves the odds of passing each part first time.

Who is eligible for the MRCOphth?

Trainees on a GMC-approved Ophthalmic Specialist Training (OST) programme are eligible to sit the MRCOphth exams. International graduates may also sit certain parts depending on their training status and the RCOphth's regulations.

MRCOphth vs FRCOphth — what is the difference?

MRCOphth is the membership examination taken during training, while FRCOphth is the fellowship. You complete the FRCOphth qualification through the RCOphth exams (which include the MRCOphth parts) and it represents the full postgraduate ophthalmology qualification.
